The calves keep coming and I’ve yet to see one born as conditions seem to be perfect for them with plenty of grass and fairly mild temperatures. The cows just seem to be finding it easy and most of the calves have been pretty alert shortly after birth, getting to their feet and finding the udder. I was almost starting to feel like a spare part!

But then, the other morning, I did have to help a calf find the milk bar when we had rather a wet morning(most welcome, I might add) and she was cold and wet. The mum was one of our oldest cows(at 13) and her udder was rather low slung so the calf needed a little help to find it. I first gave her some warm milk from a bottle to warm her up from the inside. This also meant that the suck reflex was activated and she was then actively looking for the teat. With a little guidance, I was able to get her to latch on. I then waited while she had her fill from both sides of the udder. Every calf needs a good feed of colostrum within 6 hours of birth, as this provides vital antibodies to help them stay healthy. It’s usually quite obvious when a calf has had a drink as the udder is often lighter on one side. I automatically look for these signs when I find a newborn and I don’t often have to intervene.

Market Changes & Sunday Opening We have had to make a few changes to how we operate our direct sales for various reasons. Sadly, we will no longer be able to attend some of the farmers’ markets – from June we will not be at Lingfield, Teddington or Earlswood. Our stall will be at Teddington and Earlswood for the last time on the weekend of 30th/31st May. Our friends at Hoopers Farm are taking over the stall at Lingfield from June. Ripley and Wallington markets remain unaffected.

Due to demand, the farm shop and coffee shop will be open every Sunday from 9am to 12pm. Hot drinks and a BBQ breakfast will be available on Saturdays and Sundays. Bank Holiday BBQ Sizzler Sale To help us celebrate, we have a fantastic offer, this weekend only – 10% off all frozen produce. The forecast is for a hot weekend, so come along and get some great deals for the bank holiday weekend!

Farm shop News Our own fresh pasture-raised chicken will be available every week now through until the end of October. This weekend, we also have our own fresh Pasture For Life beef and fresh, 100% grass fed lamb from a young farmer in East Grinstead.

The eggs all went last week as there is now no limit on how many you can buy at one time. If you are planning to pop in for eggs, it is always best to email to reserve – orders@brightleighfarm.co.uk
